The audiological exam tells
us the type of hearing loss and how much loss you have. It also helps us to
plan your personalized treatment.
During the test, you will be
asked to respond to several different tones and repeat some words. Your responses tell us which sounds are most
difficult for you to hear. You will hear
the tones through earphones and then through a special bone vibrator placed
behind your ear. This helps us determine if your problem is in your middle ear
- and possibly treatable medically - or in the nerves. If it is in the nerves,
most likely it cannot be treated medically.
Once your hearing loss has
been identified, a treatment and management plan is put into place. The plan
may include medical or surgical intervention, prescription of personal hearing
aids, use of assistive listening devices, aural rehabilitation to help develop
communication strategies, or simply monitoring the loss through regular exams.
